Young Emma Frost, not long after graduating from high school, was kidnapped by criminal Lucien Goff and his goons. At one point, things looked desperate, and Lucien was seriously planning to kill Emma because the kidnapping-for-ransom plot was going all wrong.

Emma manages to use her recently emerged telepathic powers to read Lucien mind. She tries to convince him that she was able to do so by telling him of things she saw in his memories. Among the things she mentions are his "father's gun."
