Early in the first episode of the TV series "Hostages," the show's central character Dr. Ellen Sanders calls her husband, Brian Sanders. He is in his office, looking at his computer screen at photos of properties his company is building. Brian apologizes for having been unable to be at her press conference earlier in the day. He tells his wife: "You know how hard I've been working on the sale of this house I'm building."
While Brian is talking to his wife, a secretary walks into his office and silently hands him a sticky note. On the note is written: "Hausman Walked; deal is dead."
Without interrupting his conversation with his wife or letting her know about this bad news he just received, Brian acknowledges that he understand what is on the note. He crumples it up and throws it away. He is clearly upset by this news. Later we learn that Brian's apparent professional success is a sham. His business is not doing well and it is really his wife who brings in the family's money.
