Police from Washington, D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department surrounded the bank and began trying to establish communication with the bank robbers. But before they really began communications, Agent Duncan Carlisle of the FBI arrived on the scene. He ordered a police sniper to shoot one of the bank robbers who was visible through a window. Carlisle announced he was the agent in charge, he talked to the remaining bank robber on the phone. Carlisle convinced him to release twelve of the hostages in exchange for the transportation he was asking for. The unnamed whimpering woman was among the twelve hostages released.
Carlisle was able to rescue the final hostage while killing the remaining bank robber.
