Sylvia Coates was the daughter of an American missionary working in Japan. Japanese Imperial forces killed the missionary who was her parent, so she dedicated her life to thwarting the Japanese forces. It is not entirely clear from the secondary reference material we have read whether Sylvia's missionary parent is her mother or her father. Possibly both of her parents were missionaries stationed in Japan, but the reference material seems to indicate only one parent (singular).
