Chris was a kindly uncle to his nephew, who always called him "Uncle Chris."

Uncle Chris found a a horseshoe. He told his nephew about how things were when he was a boy, explaining that horseshoes were lucky back then.

Uncle Chris thought that the horseshoe he found was a "lucky" horseshoe, but it didn't quite work out the way he thought. Rather than bringing him good luck or good fortune as he thought would happen, the horseshoe seemed to bring Uncle Chris nothing but bad luck - in the form of physical injuries and pain.

As his nephew witnessed, maybe things were different now, different from when Uncle Chris was a boy.

Uncle Chris appeared in New Comics #1, the first issue of the series which would become DC Comics' long-running series Adventure Comics. Most of the numerous shot features in this issue were either the beginning of an ongoing feature which appeared in multiple subsequent issues, or they were clearly intended as one-time-only strips. But a few features appeared as if they would be ongoing, repeated strips with recurring characters, but ended up appearing only once. The strip "Now -- When I Was a Boy--" (featuring Uncle Chris) fell into this category. "Now -- When I Was a Boy--" was a feature that appeared only once. Uncle Chris never appeared again.
