Sonny was a boy who was featured in a humor strip which briefly ran in DC Comics' first comic book series: New Fun. In what was apparently the first installment of the "Sonny" feature, he fell into a manhole. He emerged covered in dirt. Sonny was quite dismayed when a little black girl saw him and thought (because of the dirt on his skin) that he was black!
