An assassin (whose name was not revealed) put a bomb into Keith Remsen's luggage, which exploded when Keith was at the airport with his family, who was there to see him off. Keith Remsen was on his way to work as a summer intern at the Kleinmann Institute in Switzerland. The bomb killed Keith's parents, paralyzed Teddy so that she was permanently confined to a wheelchair, and put Keith in a coma.
After the White Event, Keith awoke with the ability to journey into the dreams of other people. He entered the dreamscape of the assassin in order to find out why the killer targeted his family. Keith (as "Nightmask") learned that the assassin had been hired by Dr. Horst Kleinmann, the head of the prestigious Kleinmann Institute. Kleinmann had believed that the Keith Remsen's parents were sending him to his institute in order to spy on him and steal secrets from his advanced dream research. That is why Kleinmann tried to have Keith killed.
The assassin died, but Keith's sister Teddy was able to act as an anchor to reality and pull him out of the dreamscape before he became trapped there or perished as a result of being in the dream of somebody while they died.
The assassin was seriously injured with burns from the explosion. Many people believed that the man who planted a bomb in Keith Remsen's luggage was a terrorist, and that he randomly selected Remsen's luggage. He was not really a terrorist. He was a hired assassin who tried to make his murder of Keith Remsen look like an act of terrorism.
