Dr. Henry Salinger was a noted physician who suffered from such extreme depression that he almost committed suicide, but was saved by Nightmask, the heroic dream-walker.
Nightmask's partner, Dr. Lucian Ballad, had a very personal reason for wanting to help Dr. Salinger. It was Dr. Salinger who introduced Lucian Ballad to the world of medicine, giving Lucian a way to rise out of the oppressive poverty of his native Haiti. This happened through Lucian's involvement in a free clinic which Dr. Salinger founded in Haiti.
When Nightmask met Dr. Salinger, the physician was regarded by many as the world's most respected doctor and medical researcher. Dr. Salinger was scheduled to receive lifetime humanitarian award from the President of the United States! But in his dreams, Dr. Salinger was a very frightened little boy dealing with some serious issues from his past.
During the Vietnam War, Dr. Salinger tested an experimental drug in Central America. Unfortunately, one of his tests went awry and killed an entire Central American village. Years later, Dr. Salinger felt so much guilt over what he had done that he was intent on committing suicide. He almost killed himself, but Nightmask used his power to enter other people's dreams to assist Dr. Salinger and overcome his suicidal urges.
