Note: confronted young Iceman, Cyclops escaping from his jail
The Nassau County sheriff had to deal with a "mutant situation" when an angry mob witnessed Bobby Drake (Iceman) use his mutant powers (in self defense) and grabbed him. The mob took Drake to the county jail run by the sheriff.
Cyclops broke Iceman out of the jail. The sheriff confronted the two mutants. The sheriff did not want the mutants to escape from jail, but he did not really hold any ill will toward them. He just wanted to sort things out.
When it became clear that the angry mob was determined to lynch the two young mutants (by hanging them), the Sheriff bravely tried to confront the mob and tell them that he would not stand for lawless "frontier justice." The mob called the Sheriff a "mutie lover" and hauled him away.
