Note: mother of boy who bullied Squid-Boy
Tommy was a young boy who lived in the same neighborhood as the young mutant Sammy Pare, also known as Squid-Boy.
One day Tommy and some other boys started bullying Tommy, something they had clearly done before. Tommy taunted Squid-Boy, asking where he had been recently, because he (Tommy) has missed the exercise he liked getting from beating up Squid-Boy. But Squid-Boy retorted with schoolyard taunt claiming (falsely) that he (Squid-Boy) had been with Tommy's mother. Tommy's specific words to Tommy, who was beginning to hit him, were: "I been at your house, Tommy... doin' it with your mom."
The meaning of the taunt was that he had been engaged in illicit activity with Tommy's mother. It was a common type of taunt at the time. Tommy didn't react angrily to this taunt, though. Tommy simply replied: "Wouldn't surprise me," which was a way to deflect Squid-Boy's taunt, even though the reply literally was a swipe at his own mother.
Although Squid-Boy lived in the same neighborhood as Tommy and actually did know Tommy's mother, none of this banter between the bully Tommy and Squid-Boy actually had anything to do with Tommy's mother. Tommy's taunt demonstrated that he had some newfound courage, and that he was no longer going to put up with being bullied by these boys. After having spent some time with Cain Marko (the Juggernaut) as a surrogate father figure, Tommy had acquired a new attitude. Immediately after the back-and-forth about Tommy's mom, Squid-Boy stopped letting Tommy hit him. Squid-Boy fought back, and ended up beating Tommy while Tommy's friends ran away.
