Summary
Stevie Hunter takes the New Mutants to a fair, where they meet half of the famed motocyclist group known as Team America. While performing a show, the three Team America cyclists are attacked by agents of the criminal organization Hydra, led by Viper and the Silver Samurai. The New Mutants and the Team America members defeat the Hydra agents, but when one of the cyclists is in danger, the mysterious Dark Rider appears. The Silver Samurai destroys the Dark Rider's motorcycle, causing the Rider to crash, only to unmask the rider and reveal Danielle Moonstar. The Viper and Silver Samurai teleport away with Danielle, intent on solving the mystery of the Dark Rider. Using Cerebro and information from Colonel Michael Rossi, Professor Charles Xavier solves the mystery of Team America and the Dark Rider. The members of Team America are a "projecting gestalt," mutants capable of projecting the abilities and knowledge of their entire team onto an unsuspecting person, transforming that person into Team America. Viper visits Honcho, another Team America member, and threatens to kill Danielle unless Team America breaks into a fortress in Mexico and steals an object for her. Professor Xavier and the New Mutants drop in on Team America as they discuss Viper's demands. Xavier explains to the team that they are mutants and that he is going to teach them how to control their power before they unwittingly harm anyone. He also tells them they must go on this mission for Viper, so that Danielle will not come to harm.
