The "alien" category is used for characters who are aliens but which have not yet been observed demonstrating religious beliefs or behaviors. Inclusion in this category rather than the "alien religions" category does not mean that the characters are non-religious. In practice, it is extremely rare for comic book writers to conceive of aliens who are genuinely non-religious. In most cases, alien characters are listed here simply because our researchers have not personally read the stories in which the characters appear and can not verify the portrayal of religious characteristics. Alternatively, the characters may have only been portrayed in a limited way and the nature of their religiousity has not yet been addressed. It is common for an alien race's religion to go un-mentioned during their first portrayal, but as the race is portrayed more times and in more depth, their religious beliefs and practices are among the most common topics addressed. This has been the case for well-known comic book alien races such as Skrull, Kree, Shi'ar, Martian, Kryptonian and Tamaranean, as well as alien races in other genres, such as Star Trek's Klingon, Vulcan and Bajoran religions.
