Number of characters in this sub-list: 7 (out of a total of 36,945 in the database).
The "miscellaneous" category simply includes characters with real-world religious affiliations that do not fall into any other existing categories. This category is NOT used for fictional religions or "religions" that are unique (idiosyncratic) to the character. (There are other categories for those situations.) Note also that "miscellaneous" does not include specific denominations and branches of religions which can be included under other religious categories. For example, ther are some relatively obscure Protestant denominations which do not merit their own category (i.e., Open Brethren, Holy Alamo) but which are listed under "Protestant (other)", while specific denominations and rarer sub-categories of Judaism (Hasidic, Reform, Kabbalah, etc.) are simply listed in the main "Jewish" section, and not under "miscellaneous."
In practice, the number of characters listed in this category has tended to be small for a number of reasons. Comic book writers tend to use the same religions that other writers have used before, so most characters with an identifiable religious affiliation can be grouped with other characters with the same religion. Typically we have listed characters in the "miscellaneous" category when they are the first character identified with a certain real-world religion. But as our research continues and other characters are added to the database, often we find other characters with the same obscure religion, and create a new category for them.
