The United Church of Christ is the religious body that includes most churches and adherents of the Protesant denominational family previously known as Congregationalism. Congregationalists were mainstream Protestants whose denomination was prominent in the early history of the United States. Over 3 dozen of the Founding Fathers were Congregationalists. Almost without exception, Congregationalists were significantly more conservative in morality and theology than the official policies of the contemporary United Church of Christ which inherited their name. Perhaps the most famous United Church of Christ member today is U.S. President Barack Obama, although he famously resigned his church membership on 31 May 2008, after 20 years as a member of a UCC congregation in Chicago.
