The comic book series New Mutants published in 2003 and 2004 was the second ongoing series to have this name, and hence was New Mutants, volume 2. (This, despite the fact that, technically, the first series was titled The New Mutants and the second series was titled simply New Mutants without the article "the.")

New Mutants (volume 2) ended with issue #13, and the series was continued the following month as New X-Men: Academy X, starting with a new issue #1. The title of this series was shortened to simply New X-Men with issue #20. Note that "New X-Men" had also been the title of a previous ongoing series for 43 issues, running from July 2001 to July 2004. The 1991 series titled simply X-Men was the second ongoing series featuring the entire X-Men team, joining The Uncanny X-Men on a monthly basis. From issues 114 through 156 a new creative team took the series in some directions and the title was temporarily re-named "New X-Men," before reverting to its original title (X-Men) with issue #157.
